Picture1 As early as your 30s or 40s, you can start to notice the tell-tale signs of aging in your mid-face region and cheek area. When collagen and elastin production in your skin decreases, your face starts to lose its elasticity and droops downward. The end result is sagging in the midface region with droopy lower eyelids, jowl formation, flattening of the cheeks and unsightly marionette lines (lines that run from the corner of your mouth to your chin). Traditional facelift procedures, although effective for the lower portion of your face and neck area, do little to address these tell-tale signs of aging in the mid-face area. A mid-face lift procedure focuses on the center of your face. By repositioning the tissues in your cheeks and mid-face area, you restore the loss of volume that has occurred over time. Where is the Mid-Face Region? The midface region is the area of your face between the highest point of your cheekbones and the central area of your cheeks where it meets your nose and then down towards the nasolabial fold. Over the last 10 years, mid-face lifts have been the primary focus of facial rejuvenation. People have realized that volume loss, particularly in the mid-face region, cause premature signs of aging with under-the-eye hollowing, deepening of deep nasolabial folds and development of jowls. Dermal fillers, such as Voluma, are wonderful at restoring volume loss. Unfortunately, it can take three to four syringes to achieve the desired result, which only lasts for one year. When you were younger, the center of your face was where you had the most of the volume. Mid-face lift procedures are designed to lift that area and restore lost volume. Mid-Face lifts are also designed to reposition the displaced volume, which is sitting on the nasolabial fold and return it back over the orbital rim to decrease the appearance of nasolabial folds, erase orbital hollowing, and restore youthful volume in the cheeks. For those hesitant to undergo surgical procedures, many people use fillers to replace that volume and produce a small lift. Differences Between Traditional Facelifts and Mid Facelifts Traditional facelifts focus more on the lower part of your face and neck region, whereas the area of concern of a mid-face lift is more centralized and focuses on the central third of your face. Regarding face lifting, many cosmetic surgeons transitioned conventional SMAS lifts and started performing deep-plane lifts. This type of lift was geared more towards the center of the face with the goal of restoring lost volume and tightening loose skin. Mid-face lifts are usually endoscopic procedures. Although they are not minimally invasive, only minimal incisions are used to perform the surgery, but it has a minimal incision. Typically, there are only one or two small incisions made behind your hairline in the temple region. No other incisions are necessary. Mid-face lifts use the same type of incision that’s used for an endoscopic brow lift. What Can A Mid-Face Lift do for Me? A mid-face lift removes the most noticeable signs of aging from your face. From deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines to sunken cheeks and jowls, sagging skin, bands on the neck, a mid-face lift can give you a rejuvenated appearance, with results lasting anywhere up to 10 years. Ideal Candidate The perfect candidate for a mid-face lift is someone looking for centralized facial rejuvenation. They may have drooping cheeks and jowls, cheeks that appear flattened due to volume loss, hollowed-appearing cheek and eye area due to volume loss and hollows or grooves under the eyes. Limitations If you already have full cheeks, you may not be a suitable candidate. Furthermore, if you are a significant amount of volume deficiency, undergoing the procedure will not lift volume that is not there. A mid-face lift is meant to reposition volume that has shifted downward. Finally, patients without sufficient cheek bone projection may benefit from cheek implants than from a lift. Things to Consider Just like other cosmetic procedures, a mid-face lift should be personalized to achieve natural results. Ideally, patients do not have pre-existing medical conditions that hinder the natural healing process, they are non-smokers and have realistic expectations of what a mid-face lift can and cannot do. If deemed not a suitable candidate, there are other minimally invasive procedures that restore lost volume to the mid-face region, including dermal fillers and cheek implants.
