Movie Review: Welcome To The Punch – Celine Chiam | Singapore Lifestyle, Beauty and Travel Blogger
About the movie
WELCOME TO THE PUNCH is the second feature from Shifty writer-director Eran Creevy and producers Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh. The film focuses on the relationship between detective Max Lewinsky and Ex-criminal Jacob Sternwood, focusing on the moment Jacob’s son is involved in a heist gone wrong, forcing him to return to London from his Icelandic hideaway. This gives Max another chance to take down the man he’s always been after, a man who has humiliated and physically scarred him. With the two men set on an unremitting collision course, they come across a deeper conspiracy that they will both need to solve in order to survive.
Written and directed by BAFTA nominated Eran Creevy (Shifty), WELCOME TO THE PUNCH is a crime-thriller shot in and around the modern city-scapes of London including the banking centre of Canary Wharf and the city’s rejuvenated East End. The film stars James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class, Wanted, Atonement, The Last King Of Scotland), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), and Andrea Riseborough (W.E.), along with Peter Mullan (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Tyrannosaur), David Morrissey (Nowhere Boy, The Other Boleyn Girl), Daniel Mays (Shifty) and Johnny Harris (The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus).
Personal view:
I have no idea how is this a breathtaking thriller movie. Throughout the 99 mins, majority of it was just plain talking and strategizing. There wasn’t much gun fights or awe-inspiring pursuits, making this a rather dull and uninteresting movie. Although the movie has a constant solemn tone, there were times that will catch you off guard with loud sudden actions.
Coupled with their British accents with no subtitles at all, I admit I had a hard time understanding what the actors were conversing. This movie is highly intense with a very intelligent plot. But the movie didn’t carry out very well-done.
I would only give this movie a 3/5.
