A poll will be hosted from 8am on 25 June on HungryGoWhere for the public to determine their top hawkers in Singapore. A shortlist of 12 hawkers has already been identified for the poll.
The list is based on the establishments’ ratings on HungryGoWhere and The Business Times’ Knight Frank CEOs’ Hawker Choices, Makansutra and popular local food and beverage television programs.
Voters will stand a chance to win $8,000 worth of HungryGoWhere Dining Cards which can be used at any restaurant that accepts Mastercard.
The poll will close on 2 July at 11.59pm.
The top voted hawkers, date and details of the cook-off will be announced on 3 July.
Looks like the leading hawker is none other than Mr Tan Chee Eng from Eng Ho Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee @ Teck Ghee Square. Following closely behind are Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Maxwell and 328 Katong Laksa @ East Coast. I will probably find a time to head down and taste it myself!
This contest is interesting especially when we finally have a platform to allow humble hawkers to gain much more recognition that they truly deserve. We will never understand how much effort these hawkers put in every one of their dishes before they serve it to the public.
But deep down I felt that the challenge between the hawkers and famous Michelin Chef Gordon Ramsay might not exactly be a fair fight. Who’s going to be the judge? Fellow singaporeans? Will there a little bit of biasness? That’s still a minor concern. Do you truly believe Mr Gordon Ramsay can really beat a hawker with twenty thirty over years of experience? I truly wonder, but time will tell when the contest takes place.
But no matter the results, I still feel that Singapore Hawkers and our hawker food has our own ‘uniquely Singapore’ essence, and for that we should be proud of it! Good food doesn’t have to be expensive and comes from a hotel/posh restaurant.
Perhaps try out some of the hawker food shown in the list of 12, in particular those that are receiving very high votes, and decide yourself which really grabs your stomach.
Have you voted? Two days left to vote, let’s go!
